Lauren "Joey" Mugford
I’m an illustrator and graphic novelist with a love of genre-bending stories and a passion for humanistic expression. I enjoy drawing diverse bodies and exploring topics like gender, sexuality, and identity. I’m particularly drawn to sentimental stories with a slight edge that are ultimately optimistic, and projects that explore the perspectives of non-heroes and imperfect characters. In another life I may have been a gothic librarian, but for now, when I’m not drawing you can find me making up recipes, taking long walks with a personalised playlist, and devouring film analysis.
For work regarding literary illustration, please contact my agent Kelly Sonnack, with Andrea Brown Literacy.

Henchboyfriends Webcomic
A sample of my test pages for my current ongoing project “Henchboyfriends,” a webcomic about 2 henchmen who are also boyfriends. A twist on the usual superhero story, Henchboyfriends tackles themes of acceptance, identity, and humanistic expression, all while challenging societal norms and typical superhero tropes.
Celebration
Celebrating diversity and individual freedom of expression are values I hold high! During the 2020 lockdown I had the joy of helping others celebrate pride from home via various pride commissions- bringing people together even while we were apart, and I wish to continue to do this through my work.

Henchboyfriends Comic
An example of my character design process, featuring my concept for a character from my Henchboyfriends comic- the supervillain the titular henchmen work for! I aim to infuse all my characters with strong narratives and clearly communicated designs. In this case- I took inspiration from classic campy comics and 80’s goth glam fashion.
