Wear My Story

This illustrated silk skirt was inspired by the traditional Indian lehenga, a long skirt primarily worn for weddings and special events. As an immigrant who never lived in India, Grace always felt disconnected from her cultural heritage. This project was a way for her to reconnect and learn more about her roots.

Photography by Isaac Mann and make-up by Alizeh Kazmi

Each of the four skirt panels represents the four different Indian states that Grace’s family is from: Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Grace used Italian silk for her fabric, gold gutta to add line work, and silk painting techniques to paint the illustrations.
