Vicky Hu

I’m Vicky, an illustrator who loves animation, video games, and fictional worlds.  I’m a passionate creator of delicate interactions between unique characters. My favourite work focuses on character design, background painting, narrative illustration, and other world-building elements.

Cetus Cantor

An original world I built for the pre-production of an animated short. The residents of an isolated arctic civilization thrive through following the sacred rituals of fishing. They learn to respect the strict cycle of life, giving back what they consume to the sky and sea by sacrificing a part of their fish to the divine birds that came before them.

For this package, I showed the process from variations to final designs for character design, props, creature designs, buildings, and environments.

Returning to the Tang Dynasty

A hardcover museum brochure guide to five of the most iconic artifacts that emerged from the Tang Dynasty (618-905 CE). For this guide, I created five narrative illustrations that imaginatively tell the story of each artifact, each paired with a 3D stylized, rotating rendition of its original.

Sai Weng’s Lost Horse

A Chinese-English comic strip based on the ancient Chinese parable, “Sai Weng’s Lost Horse.” It follows a series of seemingly unfortunate events that ultimately reveal the profound wisdom that blessings and disasters are often intertwined.

The Town of Wall

A pair of environmental illustrations that reimagine the Town of Wall from Neil Gaiman’s novel, Stardust in a fantastical way, during the most magical hour—sunset.

Little Red Riding Hood

A visual development package for an original rendition of the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. Set in Ancient China, the story follows the main character, Fei, as she encounters a sketchy artist, Mr. Lang, on her way to visit her granny.
